The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) exam is organized into 24 knowledge domains. It has 280 questions. Here is what it covers:
- Developmental processes and development through the life cycle (10-14%). Subtopics include infancy through adolescence, personality and other developmental processes, child development theory, development of gender identity and sexual orientation, psychosocial influences, and other developmental topics.
- Neurodevelopmental disorders (6-8%). Subtopics include intellectual developmental disorder, language disorder, speech sound disorder, childhood-onset fluency disorder, social communication disorder, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, specific learning disorder, developmental coordination disorder, stereotypic movement disorder, Tourette disorder, persistent motor or vocal tic disorder, and provisional tic disorder.
- Substance-related and addictive disorders (5-7%). Subtopics include alcohol-related disorders, caffeine-related disorders, cannabis-related disorders, hallucinogen-related disorders, inhalant-related disorders, opioid-related disorders, sedative/hypnotic/anxiolytic-related disorders, stimulant-related disorders, tobacco-related disorders, other substance-related disorders, gambling disorder, and phencyclidine-related disorders.
- Schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders (3-5%). Subtopics include delusional disorder, brief psychotic disorder, schizophreniform disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, substance/medication-induced psychotic disorder, psychotic disorder due to another medical condition, catatonia, other specified schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and unspecified schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
- Depressive disorders (6-8%). Subtopics include disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, substance/medication-induced depressive disorder, depressive disorder due to another medical condition, other specified depressive disorder, unspecified depressive disorder, and unspecified mood disorder.
- Bipolar and related disorders (3-5%). Subtopics include bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, cyclothymic disorder, substance/medication-induced bipolar and related disorders, bipolar and related disorder due to another medical condition, other specified bipolar and related disorder, and unspecified bipolar and related disorder.
- Anxiety disorders (6-8%). Subtopics include separation anxiety disorder, selective mutism, specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, substance/medication-induced anxiety disorder, anxiety disorder due to another medical condition, other specified anxiety disorder, and unspecified anxiety disorder.
- Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (1-2%). Subtopics include obsessive-compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, trichotillomania, excoriation disorder, substance/medication-induced obsessive-compulsive and related disorder, disorder due to another medical condition, other specified obsessive-compulsive and related disorder, and unspecified obsessive-compulsive and related disorder.
- Trauma- and stressor-related disorders (5-7%). Subtopics include reactive attachment disorder, disinhibited social engagement disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, acute stress disorder, adjustment disorders, prolonged grief disorder, other specified trauma- and stressor-related disorder, and unspecified trauma- and stressor-related disorder.
- Dissociative disorders (1-2%). Subtopics include dissociative identity disorder, dissociative amnesia, depersonalization/derealization disorder, other specified dissociative disorder, and unspecified dissociative disorder.
- Somatic symptom and related disorders (2-4%). Subtopics include somatic symptom disorder, illness anxiety disorder, functional neurological symptom disorder, psychological factors affecting other medical conditions, factitious disorder, other specified somatic symptom and related disorder, and unspecified somatic symptom and related disorder.
- Feeding and eating disorders (2-4%). Subtopics include pica, rumination disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, other specified feeding or eating disorder, and unspecified feeding or eating disorder.
- Elimination disorders (1-3%). Subtopics include enuresis, encopresis, other specified elimination disorder, and unspecified elimination disorder.
- Sleep-wake disorders (1-3%). Subtopics include insomnia disorder, hypersomnolence disorder, narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea, central sleep apnea, sleep-related hypoventilation, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, non-REM sleep arousal disorders, nightmare disorder, REM sleep behavior disorder, restless legs syndrome, substance/medication-induced sleep disorder, and other specified or unspecified sleep-wake disorders.
- Sexual dysfunctions (1-2%). Subtopics include substance/medication-induced sexual dysfunction, other specified sexual dysfunction, and unspecified sexual dysfunction.
- Gender dysphoria (1-3%). Subtopics include other specified gender dysphoria and unspecified gender dysphoria.
- Disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders (5-7%). Subtopics include oppositional defiant disorder, intermittent explosive disorder, conduct disorder, pyromania, kleptomania, other specified disruptive impulse-control and conduct disorder, and unspecified disruptive impulse-control and conduct disorder.
- Personality disorders (4-6%). Subtopics include paranoid personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, dependent personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, personality change due to another medical condition, other specified personality disorder, unspecified personality disorder, and general personality disorder.
- Paraphilic disorders (1-2%). Subtopics include voyeuristic disorder, exhibitionistic disorder, frotteuristic disorder, sexual masochism disorder, sexual sadism disorder, pedophilic disorder, fetishistic disorder, transvestic disorder, other specified paraphilic disorder, and unspecified paraphilic disorder.
- Other conditions that may be a focus of clinical attention (6-8%).
- Neurocognitive disorders (1-3%). Subtopics include delirium, major or mild frontotemporal neurocognitive disorder, neurocognitive disorder due to traumatic brain injury, substance/medication-induced neurocognitive disorder, neurocognitive disorder due to HIV infection, Huntington disease, other medical conditions, multiple etiologies, and unspecified neurocognitive disorder.
- Neurologic disorders (3-5%). Subtopics include infections of the nervous system, vascular diseases, disorders of cerebrospinal and brain fluids, neuro-oncology, trauma, birth injuries and developmental abnormalities, genetic diseases, cerebral degenerations of childhood, ataxias, headache, movement disorders, myopathies, demyelinating diseases, epilepsy, neurologic complications of systemic diseases, neurotoxicology, pain syndromes, and other neurologic disorders.
- Forensic psychiatry (1-3%). Subtopics include legal regulation of psychiatry, civil matters, criminal matters, death penalty, correction/correctional healthcare, legal system/basic law, children/families, and special issues in forensic psychiatry.
